William Hawkins
Graduate Structural Engineer

Who I am and what makes me tick…
William Hawkins is a Graduate Structural Engineer with both design and on-site experience. After two summer internships with Centrespace during his degree, he started full time at the start of 2026.
What prompted you to start a career in Structural Engineering?
After starting a general engineering degree, I decided to specialise in civil, structural and environmental engineering as I enjoyed the possibilities and challenges that the discipline brings. The importance and variety of the work structural engineers undertake is also hugely exciting.
How has your previous experience helped you at Centrespace Design?
Having previous site engineering experience, and therefore an appreciation of construction methods and sequences, helps me ensure that every design is suitable for both the client and the construction team. Additionally, my previous research into truss optimisation allows me to reduce material usage and embodied carbon in some steel structures.
Which part of your work gives you the greatest sense of achievement?
Seeing a finished project is always very fulfilling. Being able to pick out details designed by my colleagues and I makes every project feel special.
How would people describe you?
I hope that people consider me diligent, approachable and helpful.
What motivates you to do what you do?
I enjoy seeing the transformation which is possible in structures. Often projects start with a building which has deteriorated and is no longer fit for purpose. The final product is always safe and tailored to the client’s needs, maximising comfort and functionality.
What can you be found doing when you’re not at work?
I enjoy walking, cooking, swimming, gaming and reading about a range of non-fiction topics. During longer breaks I enjoy travelling, surfing and scuba diving.
