SHEEPHOUSE
A sensitive conversion project in Henley-on-Thames, located on the Bremont Estate, involving the transformation of two former farm buildings—originally stables—into two separate residential dwellings. The scheme focuses on preserving the existing character, including the conservation of original oak trusses and rafters, while carefully integrating new structural elements.
A key constraint of the project was the requirement to retain the original roof structure while introducing new foundations to support the redevelopment. This required included propping the underside of the existing roof structure, whilst creating space below to facilitate the installation of new concrete pad footings and a ground-bearing slab.
Working closely with planning authorities due to the floodplain location, the design conceals structural steel within a traditional flint and block build-up, allowing the historic timber trusses to remain exposed and celebrated.
Throughout, the structural approach has been carefully considered to remain as unobtrusive as possible, maximising the retention of the historic fabric.
